DISCOVER THE TOWN
When Derartu Tulu won the 10,000m at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, she became the first African woman to win an Olympic gold and inspired a generation of athletes from her home town, Bekoji.

Since then Bekoji has become a magnet for aspiring runners in the region, with many moving from the rural areas to train with Tulu's first coach, Sentayehu.

Bekoji is a small town 200 miles south of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. It has a population of 16,000 and is growing fast as road and communications link it to the outside world.

Most of the residents are from farming and herding families. The town is 10,000 ft above sea level, making it perfect for altitude training, but it is its world beating distance runners that inspire young people to take up the sport.
